“It felt like the whole world remembered me”: Zion’s birthday story

3-minute read Published on 30 August 2025

Through the Heritage Gardens birthday celebration fund, five-year-old Zion enjoyed her first ever birthday party – complete with cake, songs and friends who made her feel truly special.

For many children, birthdays are a time of joy and excitement. But for families facing financial hardship, they can also be a painful reminder of everything they cannot afford. Cakes, treats and gifts are often impossible luxuries.

Zion’s mother told us that, before this year, birthdays came and went quietly at home: “We would say a prayer and I would hug her, but there was no cake, no singing. I felt guilty, but there was nothing extra to spare.”

A simple party with a big impact

Through the birthday celebration fund, the Heritage Gardens team organised a small party for Zion and her friends. There was a cake with her name on it, balloons, music and a card signed by other children in the programme.

When everyone began to sing “Happy Birthday”, Zion covered her face with her hands and then burst into laughter. Later she told a staff member: “It felt like the whole world remembered me.”

Her mother described how that moment changed the way Zion talked about herself: “She used to say, ‘I am just a quiet girl, nobody knows me.’ Now she says, ‘I am the girl who had the big cake at Heritage Gardens!’ It gave her a story of joy to hold onto.”

Why birthdays matter for belonging

Celebrations like this might seem small, but they send a powerful message to children: you are seen, you are valued and you are worth celebrating. This is especially important for children who have experienced loss, instability or stigma.

Our birthday fund is about much more than cake. It is about building memories of warmth and connection that support children’s mental health for years to come.

Thank you to everyone who contributes to this fund. Together we are turning ordinary days into moments of joy that tell children: you matter.
